Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. It’s original meaning came from a tradition in which observers would watch a groundhog emerge from the winter for the first time. If the groundhog went back into his burrow, it meant that winter would continue for six more weeks, but if it stays out, it means that spring is coming early.
The tradition seems to come from German-speaking areas that had weather-forecasting animals, such as badgers. It’s primarily a fun little holiday for children, as it’s not a federal holiday that gives days off of work.
